Times Square’s New Year’s Eve ball has been lit with 32,256 Luxeon LEDs supplied by Philips.

The Times Square ball is located on top of the One Times Square building in New York which is used as part of the city’s New Year’s Eve celebrations. Every New Year’s Eve at 11:59pm EST, the Times Square ball is lowered 43m down a flagpole, resting at midnight to signal the start of the new year.

Philips has been tasked with lighting New York’s New Year’s Eve ball, as its official lighting partner for the 13th consecutive year. New York’s 2013 ball includes a redesigned Philips A-19 60-watt LED, which the company said uses 11 watts of power while putting out 830 lumens.

Ed Crawford, CEO of lamps, lighting electronics and controls, Philips said: “The Times Square ball is an icon for the world to see, but more important, it is a real-world example of how innovation can enhance our lives while creating a more sustainable community.”

The city’s first ‘ball drop’ in Times Square took place in 1907.
