1. Client Challenge:

The Almeric L. Christian Federal Building & Courthouse is one of the hundreds of historical buildings that make up the GSA Northeast and Caribbean Region (2). This region is committed to supporting GSA’s goal to eliminate its impact on the natural environment and to use its government-wide influence to reduce the overall environmental impact of the federal government. Due to the high cost of power on the island of St. Croix, there was a tremendous amount of savings to be created by upgrading an outdated lighting system. The plan was to incorporate LED technology and networked controls for their courtrooms and offices spanning more than 60,000 square feet.

RTS performed an audit of the entire federal building including exterior walkways, courtyards, and parking lots. RTS evaluated vast numbers of variables such as how space will be used, the amount of day-light, load potential, dimming, lamp color, initial cost, and cost to maintain moving forward.

2. Lighting Solution:

Retro-Tech performed a lighting upgrade within the Almeric L. Christian Federal Building. This 100%-LED lighting project was performed in order to provide new LED luminaries and control systems for courtrooms and offices. The upgrade included new dimming LED cans, new LED 2×4 Troffers, and new LED shoebox fixtures. In addition, all lighting controls were installed with additional relays for integration with a new building automation system. Overall, more than 1,000 LED fixtures and lamps were installed.

3. The Results:

The overall results are impressive. Not only was this one of the first All-LED Federal Lighting projects but this new, entirely all-LED lighting system is fully integrated with the newly upgraded building automation system. In summary, this project reduced the facilities kWh consumption by 189,000 kWh annually.
