Arizona State University (ASU) is a public metropolitan research university on five campuses across the Phoenix metropolitan area, and four regional learning centers throughout Arizona. ASU is ranked #1 in the U.S. for Innovation, dedicated to accessibility and academic excellence. ASU is one of the largest public universities by enrollment in the U.S. As of fall 2019, the university had nearly 90,000 students attending classes across its metro campuses, more than 38,000 students attending online, including 83,000-plus undergraduates and more than nearly 20,000 postgraduates.

1. Client Challenge

As a leader in sustainability, Arizona State University (ASU) has unveiled a plan to guide students, faculty, staff, and partners in making the University carbon neutral by 2025. To be sustainable, qualities such as clean air, clean water, health, security and prosperity are extremely important to the University.

In order to reach its sustainability goals, ASU wanted to automate certain areas with lighting controls and upgrade existing T12 and T8 fluorescent technology to LED.

2. Lighting Solution

The project included the installation of 40,000 Interior LED Retrofits and over 1,500 Occupancy Controls.

3. Results

The energy savings for this project were significant. The annual kWh and kW were reduced by 56.3% and 52.1% respectively. This project also saved $507,000 in energy and HVAC annually.
